After Ike: Federal Support For Essential Missions Continues
WASHINGTON – The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is coordinating the joint efforts of federal, tribal, state and local partners as they work to help those hurt or put at risk by the passage of Hurricane Ike. President George W. Bush declared major disasters in Texas and Louisiana, making available federal funds to assist individuals and communities in their recovery. (Read more )
Disaster Recovery Centers Temporarily Closed Due to Severe Weather
BATON ROUGE, La. -- All Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) throughout the state will remain closed until further notice due to severe weather predictions, state and federal disaster officials announced tonight.
"Safety is our highest priority," said Mike Hall, the Federal Emergency Management Agency's federal coordinating officer. "Once all threat of impact from Hurricane Ike has passed, the DRCs will be up and running to help meet the needs of Louisiana residents."
The eight DRCs, located in Assumption, Ascension, East Feliciana, Lafourche, Livingston, Point Coupee, Terrebonne and West Baton Rouge parishes, will reopen once officials determine it is safe for workers and residents to travel within those areas. The Lafourche Parish DRC, in the old Walmart building on Highway 1 in Mathews, opened for the first time on Thursday before being forced to close.

Federal Aid Programs For Texas Disaster Recovery
Following is a summary of key federal disaster aid programs that can be made available as needed and warranted under President Bush’s emergency disaster declaration issued for Texas. "Emergency" is any occasion or instance in which the president determines that federal assistance is needed to supplement state and local efforts to save lives and protect property and public health and safety or to avert the threat of a catastrophe in any part of the United States.(Read more).
FEMA Assistance to Include Hotel/Motel Stays for Gustav Evacuees Whose Homes are Inaccessible or Uninhabitable
FEMA has activated procedures under its transitional sheltering initiative that allows eligible Gustav evacuees who cannot return to their homes to stay in hotels or motels until it is safe for them go home. (Read more).
