Capability Replacement Laboratory Scope
The Capability Replacement Laboratory project is responsible for ensuring the Lab safely and cost-effectively builds nearly 350,000 square feet of modern laboratories by 2011—the largest construction effort in the history of PNNL. Jim McClusky is the director for the CRL Project Office and Dale Knutson is the deputy director. The CRL project is funded using a mix of federal, private and PNNL dollars.
The federally funded, $224-million line-item portion consists of building a new research complex, the Physical Sciences Facility, on the Horn Rapids Triangle and extending the operating life of Building 325 in the 300 Area by 20 years.
Physical Sciences Facility will contain:
- Ultra-trace
- Radiation Detection
- Materials Science & Technology
- Chemistry and Processing
Building 325 will contain:
- Shielded Operations
- Radiation Detection
- Materials Science & Technology
- Chemistry and Processing
Private developers will build two facilities—the Biological Sciences Facility and the Computational Sciences Facility—that Battelle, the operating contactor of PNNL, will lease.
Biological Sciences Facility will contain:
- Systems Biology
Computational Sciences Facility will contain:
- Information Analytics
PNNL will be using internal maintenance and operating funds to extend the operating life of three facilities in the 300 Area for 20 years.
Building 318 will contain:
- Certification & Dosimetry
Building 331 will contain:
- Subsurface Science
- Environmental Biomarkers
