WASHINGTON-The Wireless Innovations in Communications Initiative (WICI) Committee
will hold a meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000 to hear representatives from the Federal
Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) make a presentation on telecommunications
technologies that support FEMA's all-hazards mission. ITS America (in conjunction with the
Department of Transportation) and COMCare Alliance will make presentations on public safety
and the integration of emergency systems in the transportation arena. Based on discussions
following the briefings, industry representatives are encouraged to prepare responsive
presentations for subsequent meetings.
WICI, an initiative of the Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and
Information Administration (NTIA), is designed to provide a venue for the federal government to
promote innovative thinking in the development and utilization of new communications
technologies. Specific goals of the WICI are to identify new wireless technologies and new
spectrum management approaches that will enable federal users to satisfy their communications
needs more effectively and efficiently, and to encourage private sector innovation and greater
public/private cooperation. The WICI Committee, established as an ad hoc committee of the
Interdepartment Radio Advisory Committee, is composed of senior experts from various federal
government agencies.
