WASHINGTON-Gregory L. Rohde, Assistant Secretary for Communications and Information and administrator of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), will be available to the press on Thursday, August 10, to discuss NTIA's proposed measurement plan to assess the potential of interference issues from ultrawideband systems to the Global Positioning System (GPS).
NTIA, in a Federal Register notice to be published shortly, invites public review and comment on the proposed measurement plan. UWB systems, a promising new telecommunications technology, have very wide information bandwiths and can perform a number of useful telecommunications functions making them appealing for both commercial and government applications. GPS plays a pivotal role in many of the nation's critical radiocommunications systems.
The evaluation will be done by NTIA's Office of Spectrum Management in Washington and by its Institute for Telecommunication Sciences in Boulder, Colo. Details of Assistant Secretary Rohde's press availability are:

NTIA recently sought public comment on a test plan covering the effects of UWB signals on selected Federal radio receivers other than GPS receivers.
