of Educational and Cultural Affairs U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE United States and Chile to Sign New Scholarship Agreement: Expanded Higher Education Opportunities in the United States for Chileans On August 8, 2007, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and the Republic of Chile’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alejandro Foxley, will sign the U.S.-Chile Educational Scholarship Agreement in the Treaty Room of the U.S. Department of State. Through a new scholarship program, the agreement will bring up to 100 Chilean Ph.D. students to the United States each year for degree study in fields that are priorities for Chile’s future, including science and technology, public policy, environmental studies, education, and public health. The new agreement expands the scope of the existing U.S.-Chile Educational Exchange Agreement – which established the binational Fulbright Program between the two countries – and increases access and equal opportunity for Chileans to pursue advanced degree study at universities in the United States with high quality academic programs in their fields of interest. As outlined in the agreement, the new scholarship program will target a diverse group of Chileans by providing pre-academic English language training, if needed, to reach talented students who would otherwise not be in a position to pursue graduate study in the United States. This major higher education initiative reflects a strong commitment to U.S. and Chilean shared values, and demonstrates an innovative model for increased cooperation and partnership in the hemisphere. The U.S. - Chile Fulbright Program celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in 2005. The Fulbright Program is the world-renowned, flagship international educational program supported by the people of the United States and partner countries around the world and sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. The Fulbright Program has provided more than 279,000 participants with the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, to exchange ideas and to contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.
