Color images in a mosaic released today are the highest-resolution pictures ever sent from Mars, more than three times as detailed as images from Mars Pathfinder in 1997. The scene rises from near the edge of Spirit's lander platform to the sky. Scientists are examining every detail to learn about the landing area within Gusev Crater. Gusev Crater is a 90-mile wide hole in the ground that probably formed three to four billion years ago when an asteroid crashed just south of Mars equator. ThereÂs a channel system that drains into it, which probably carried liquid water, or water and ice, into the crater. Spirit's twin craft, Opportunity, is scheduled to land in three weeks.
