Office of Budget and Performance Mission

The Office of Budget and Performance ensures sufficient resources and accountability for their wise and efficient use in promoting the scientific and business excellence of the USGS.

Office of Budget and Performance Vision

The Office of Budget and Performance leads the USGS to secure the fiscal resources needed to provide scientific information for informed decision making and oversees accountability for these resources and program performance in accordance with the laws of the land, guidelines for sound fiscal management, and the intent of Congress.

Team Objectives

The USGS Office of Budget and Performance (OBP) aligns USGS issues, strategies, and funding with the strategic planning, priorities, and policy of the Administration, Department of the Interior, and Congress. The OBP integrates the three themes of budget development, planning and performance management, and regional coordination and communication via functional teams:

Budget Formulation and Execution Team — Provides guidance to senior managers in formulating annual budget requests and developing budget initiatives; analyzes budget initiative proposals to ensure they comport with bureau and Department policy; develops budget justifications; integrates budget and performance metrics; participates in integrated science program development; and communicates proposals to the Department, OMB, and the Congress. Allocates funds received from Treasury to appropriate discipline accounts, monitors and reports expenditures and ensures compliance with Federal financial regulations.

Planning and Performance Management Team — Grows awareness, develops understanding, recommends strategy, and supports managerial cost accounting to ensure USGS compliance with Executive and Legislative Branch mandates for budget and performance integration and program performance accountability to preserve the public trust.
