Illinois Interagency Committee on Employees with Disabilities Programs

Current ICED Programs

Each year, the Committee hosts a videoconference for state employees, educational programs for state agencies, and an Awards Program for public and private entities around the state. The Committee also sponsors an Intemship Program for College Students with Disabilities

Educational Programs

The Committee sponsors an annual videoconference in the fall, to which all state employees with disabilities are invited. Past conferences have addressed the issues of technology in the workplace, state benefits for employees with disabilities, and advocacy techniques. Handout and reference materials are provided, and employees have time to ask questions.

The Committee also makes training available for agency EEOI AA Officers and ADA Coordinators on significant legal issues. All of the Committee's programs are provided free of charge.

Awards Program

Each year the Committee hosts an Awards Ceremony and Reception to honor individuals and organizations that have promoted independence and civil rights for people throughout the state. Award categories include Employee, Agency, Legislator, Nonprofit organization, and the Media.

Internship Program

In 1999 the Committee created an Internship Program for College Students with Disabilities to provide work experience for a group of students that has difficulty in entering the work force and to increase the diversity of state agencies.

College students with active rehabilitation cases are recruited statewide with the assistance of Anixter Center, a nonprofIt rehabilitation agency in the Chicago area. Both state agencies and the student interns have benefIted from this program. Several students have gained permanent employment with state agencies, and attitudinal barriers to employment of people with disabilities have been lessened as a result of agencies learning first hand what people with disabilities can do.
