UNDP calls for $18.6 million to help survivors of hurricanes in Haiti

12 September - In response to the devastating hurricanes that displaced tens of thousands of families in Haiti in recent weeks, UNDP called for $18.6 million to help affected communities get back on their feet.

Sharapova launches scholarships for Chernobyl-affected youth
18 September - Tennis star Maria Sharapova announced that she is launching a $210,000 scholarship programme for students from Chernobyl-affected areas of Belarus. The programme is a joint initiative of the Maria Sharapova Foundation and UNDP, where she serves as Goodwill Ambassador.

12 September - The world has made strong and sustained progress in reducing extreme poverty, the United Nations reports today, but this is now being undercut by higher prices, particularly of food and oil, and the global economic slowdown.
