WIC Growth Charts for 2-5 Year Olds

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) created these new Weight-for-age (WFA) and Stature-for-age (SFA) charts with direction from the Supplemental Food Programs Division (SFPD). These new charts focus only on WIC aged children, making documentation and tracking easier. No changes have been made to any of the Boys and Girls 2000 CDC Growth Charts. The following characteristics will help you understand these new charts:

  dot only the 2-5 year age range is represented - which allows for more space between age indicators and percentile curves, making it easier to plot and read;
  dot weight is labeled every 5 pounds with a line for every pound;
  dot stature is labeled every inch with a line for every quarter inch;
  dot age is labeled for every year and half year (2-5) with a line for every 2 months;
  dot English units are on the primary scale and metric units are on the secondary (outside) scale; and
  dot the WIC logo has been added to the border.
  dot Printers may want to use the black and white files.

For your information, the BMI-for-age charts for 2-20 year olds was not modified due to the fact that the current chart has adequate space for plotting.

The Boys BMI-for-age and the Girls BMI-for-age facilitate the creation of a two-sided clinical chart, similar to the current CDC Clinical Growth Chart for children with SFA and WFA on one side and BMI-for-age on the other side.

To view, print, and reproduce clinical growth charts
All clinical growth charts may be viewed, downloaded, and printed in Adobe Acrobat. Higher resolution PDF files (Color) are available to provide the highest resolution and are intended to be used as a high quality print master for quantity production when using the services of a commercial printing facility. The recommended ink colors for printing are Pantone 206 red (for girls) and Pantone 286 blue (for boys). The recommended paper weight is 80#. Charts should be printed as two-sided copies, in the following combinations for each sex :
  • Side 1: Stature-for-age + Weight-for-age (2-5 years)
    Boys
    Girls
  • Side 2: BMI-for-age (2-20 years)
    Boys
    Girls
