2003 ANNUAL REPORT
Willamette National Forest

A Message from the Forest Supervisor

Faced with decreasing budgets, employees worked hard in 2003 to cut facilities’costs by completing a three-tiered strategy: 1) moving the main office from Eugene to a National Guard facility in Springfield; 2) moving the Sweet Home office to a refurbished work center in town; and 3) sharing the Lowell office with the Army Corps of Engineers.

After several years of planning, we also completed construction on the Detroit Ranger Station and improved the off-highway access. The office includes an interpretive area, funded by the Federal Highways Administration, which will highlight the West Cascades National Scenic Byway.

The summer brought two fires, both of which burned through highly popular recreation areas. The 5000-acre Clark Fire burned Bedrock campground and the fully accessible Johnny Creek Trail. The 90,000-acre B&B Complex Fire burned about 20,000 acres on the Willamette. It went into the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness Area and threatened numerous public and private structures around Santiam Pass.

This year also brought new members to ourleadership team: Doris Tai, Recreation and PublicAffairs Staff Officer; Paul Matter, Detroit DistrictRanger; and Kathy Bulchis, Natural Resources StaffOfficer. All three are highly skilled and I am excited towork with them and the rest of the team in the comingyears. In addition, John Allen, long-time McKenzieRiver District Ranger, left for a Deputy ForestSupervisor position in Montana. We expect to fill that position by summer of 2004.

Finally, it is always important to recognize and thank all of you who continue to provide support and assistance to a great National treasure, the Willamette National Forest.
