Primary Responsibilities/Activities:
As Chief of the Aquatic Sciences Branch, Barry oversees the work of 15-20 Branch employees.  Their work focuses mainly on the ecology of large rivers, with most of the work conducted on the Upper Mississippi River System. 

Research Interests:
Research within the Aquatic Sciences Branch is focused mainly on the interactions of plants and animals with river habitats, nutrient dynamics, biological production in large rivers, and the ecology of native mussels. 

Active Projects: 
Dr. Johnson’s own work has focused on the Center’s partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers programs on the Upper Mississippi River System, mainly through management of the Long Term Resource Monitoring Program and serving as co-chairperson for the Science Panel of the Navigation and Ecosystem Sustainability Program.
