Hanford Meteorological Station

sunset

The Hanford Meteorological Station (HMS) is centrally located on the Hanford Site in south-central Washington State. Through this facility, scientists at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory provide meteorological expertise to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and its Hanford Site contractors to help ensure that activities on the site can operate in as safe and efficient a manner as possible in the event of adverse meteorological events or conditions. This work is funded through the DOE Meteorological and Climatological Services Project.

The HMS provides a variety of forecast products for Hanford Site activities, and maintains a historical database of meteorological parameters collected via the Hanford Meteorological Monitoring Network. This network consists of 30 meteorological stations located throughout the site and surrounding area. Each station includes a tower equipped with standard monitoring instrumentation for measuring wind speed, wind direction, air temperature and pressure, and precipitation.
