Form EIA-861 Final Data File for 2006

This is an electric utility data file that includes such information as peak load, generation, electric purchases, sales, revenues, customer counts and demand-side management programs, green pricing and net metering programs, and distributed generation capacity. The data source is the survey Form EIA-861, "Annual Electric Power Industry Report." Data for all years are final.

The file F861yr06.exe is a final file of data collected on the Form EIA-861, Annual Electric Power Industry Report, for the reporting period, calendar year 2006. The zipped .exe file contains 6 .xls files and one Word file. The data file structure detailed here also applies to data files for 2004 and 2005.

  • File1 contains aggregate operational data such as energy balance, and revenue information from each electric utility in the country, including power marketers, and Federal power marketing administrations. File1_CAO contains information on control area operators.
  • File2 contains information on retail revenue, sales, and customer counts, by State and class of service (including the Transportation sector, new in 2003), for each electric distribution utility, for all consumers provided fully bundled electric service (both energy and delivery service) by a single electric utility or energy service provider in all 50 States, the District of Columbia, the Dominion of Puerto Rico, and the Territories of American Samoa, Guam, and the Virgin Islands.
  • File3 contains information on electric utility demand-side management programs, including energy efficiency and load management effects and expenditures. For information on the new Transportation consumer sector, see the note for File2 above.
  • File4 contains the names of the counties, by State, in which the respondent has equipment for the distribution of electricity to ultimate consumers.

Final data for the years 1990 through 1998 are in self-extracting zip files which expand into 5 DBF files (F861TYP1.DBF, F861TY2A.DBF, F861TY2B.DBF, F861TYP3.DBF, F861TYP7DBF); and Notepad versions of the file layout ("layout"), the Form EIA-861 (WordPerfect), and EIA-861 Instructions (instr.wpd). To expand the file, type F861yy.EXE* (requires 5-6 megs space). The file structure for the years 1990 through 1998 differs from that for the 1999 and 2000 files described in the preceding paragraph. The primary difference is that file F861TYP1.DBF contains a combination of data available in the 1999, 2000, and 2001 in file1.xls and file2.dbf. Utility retail sales data, for utilities with sales in 3 or more States are shown in F861TYP3.dbf for the third, fourth, fifth, etc., States. Utility Demand-side Management information for the years 1990 through 1998 is available in F861TY2A.DBF and F861TY2B.DBF.
