 Highlights:

• Data from SAMHSA's 2002-2004 National Surveys on Drug Use & Health were pooled to examine rates of cigarette smoking among various racial and ethnic groups.

• Rates of past month cigarette smoking among persons aged 12 or older were highest among American Indians or Alaska Natives (34.8%) and persons of two or more races (34.6%). Past month cigarette smoking was lowest among Asians (13.4%).

• Among Asians, the rate of past month cigarette smoking was highest among Koreans (24.9%) and lowest among Chinese (7.5%).

• Among Hispanic past month smokers, Puerto Ricans and Cubans were more likely to report daily cigarette smoking than Central or South Americans or Mexicans.

This Short Report,  The NSDUH Report: Past Month Cigarette Use Among Racial and Ethnic Groups, is based on SAMHSA's  National Survey on Drug Use and Health conducted by the Office of Applied Studies (OAS) in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).  SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) is the primary source of information on the prevalence, patterns, and consequences of drug and alcohol use and abuse and for selected mental health measures in the general U.S. civilian non institutionalized population, age 12 and older.   SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use & Health also provides estimates for drug use and for selected mental health measures by State.
