Overview:
Study the bird families found in all parts of North America north of Mexico. Learn about North American fossil birds; the origins of our bird families; and the conservation of North American birds. The course will cover classifications, species, distribution patterns, and migration. Preserved bird specimens will be on display for students' examination. Field trips will foster knowledge of habitats, identification and birdsong recognition.

This course is part of the Certificate of Accomplishment in Natural History Field Studies.

Prerequisites:
Introduction to Ornithology (NATH1118E) or a basic knowledge of birds is recommended.

Objectives:
  • Develop an understanding of the origin of our oceans, and the everyday processes happening in our ocean environment;
  • Understand the value of scientific data and the scientific method in answering questions in the field of oceanography;
  • Gain an appreciation of the many plant and animal organisms found in our oceans, and the delicate balances and interactions that occur between different ocean communities;
  • Make connections between the various Earth systems: atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, geosphere, and the cryosphere.
