FBI Laboratory Specialized Training Program

Latent Print Photography

Course dates to be announced

This course is for law enforcement personnel who wish to learn imaging technologies in photographically preserving latent impressions from physical evidence found at crime scenes and in crime laboratories and also parallel traditional silver halide film photography (analog photography) with digital imaging technology (photography). The course introduces the student to the capture technology for latent impressions from physical evidence found at crime scenes and in crime laboratories. Imaging technology covered in this course are areas that pertain to obtaining quality images for documenting/documentation, examination/analysis, and court presentation. Imaging technology covers the proper selection of cameras, lenses, films, filters, specialized lighting techniques, and high energy forensic monochromatic lights.

Digital imaging technology system covers capture devices, capture media, enhancement techniques, archival storage media, standard operating procedures, and legal admissibility of digital imaging in court. Throughout this course the student will "set-aside" what their department's involvements are with silver halide photography and digital imaging technology—that is, the type of equipment used, how they use it, the advantages and limitations that exist, and the current procedures.

Students will apply all the technology discussed as if their department has unlimited funding. At the end of this course, students will make recommendations for executing these new technologies to improve productivity. They will also recommend changes to their SOP to reflect the new approaches using the current budget and recommendations for an enhanced budget. Three hours of undergraduate credit can be earned from this course through University of Virginia.
