Larry Berg and Mikhail Pekour Recognized for Contributions to Security at Rose Bowl

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory researchers Larry Berg and Mikhail Pekour received kudos from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) following a successful deployment of the Rapidly Deployable Chemical Detection System during the January 2007 Rose Bowl and at the Rose Parade preceding the game. Dr. Jeffrey Stiefel, Biosecurity Program Manager within the DHS Science and Technology Directorate, included these words in his letter to PNNL:

"Thanks to the Herculean efforts of Mr. Larry K. Berg, as well as Mr. Mikhail S. Pekour, the capability to detect, track, and relay information on toxic chemical releases was provided on short notice."

The two researchers traveled to Pasadena to manage the meteorological components of the overall system, which also includes air and land based chemical detection capabilities. The meteorological component provides realtime information about temperature, wind speed, and wind direction, to assist with plume tracking and, if needed, subsequent evacuation strategies.

Congratulations, Larry and Mikhail!
