Multidimensional Supernova Simulations

Instability of a Standing Accretion Shock

The first movie is a 2D simulation of the instability of a stationary accretion shock. The last three are 3D runs, the first being a surface rendering, the last two being volume renderings. What is shown in all four is the rapid, unsaturated, nonlinear growth of a long-wavelength, l=1,2 mode instability, which may have ramifications for the supernova mechanism, energetics, and dynamics and phenomenology.
