When we learn and use information that can improve our health, we have hope for a healthy future. The NHLBI presents a new series of resources to promote healthy lifestyles among African Americans. All have been rewritten, updated, and expanded and feature new artwork in full color.

Let’s Get Cooking!

Want to cook dishes that offer new, flavorful flare or prepare your favorite African American recipes in ways that protect you and your family from heart disease and stroke? This updated cookbook provides recipes for 26 tested, tasty, and heart healthy African American dishes such as Smothered Greens and Jamaican Jerk Chicken. Recipes give the recommended serving sizes. In addition to the basic nutrient analysis, the cookbook also provides fiber, protein, carbohydrate, and potassium analysis as well as heart healthy food substitutions and food safety.

Empower Yourself and Your Community: Share Information on Heart Healthy Living

The new, easy-to-read, educational booklet On the Move to Better Heart Health provides concise information on heart disease and its risk factors from the most recent clinical guidelines and recommendations. It has a new style with more interactive text, culturally sensitive motivation, and African American role models who offer personal and positive viewpoints on making heart health a part of everyday lifestyle. On the Move to Better Heart Health replaces the older, 7-booklet set formerly known as Improving Cardiovascular Health in African Americans.

It explains heart attack signs and how to respond to them, as well as how to prevent and control high blood pressure and diabetes, lower cholesterol, and manage weight.  Includes many action plans and check lists for adding heart healthy habits to daily family life.   A Heart Health Card helps track progress.
