 Student Comments

Through various career and mentoring programs MMS and a few other sectors of the U.S. Department of the Interior have been giving students great opportunities.  Students range from high school through college and even have graduate school experience.  MMS opened its doors to students and was lucky to obtain such a diverse and professional group of individuals from different parts of the country and institutions.

This is what some of them had to say about their experience here at MMS:

Working with the Hardware/Software team has increased my knowledge of troubleshooting and eventually repairing problems with PC’s and printers.  This experience will be essential when obtaining an A+ Certification, which I plan to pursue this upcoming fall.  In the upcoming weeks, I will work with the Infrastructure, GIT/GIS, Unix, Microcomputer, and Office Automation teams.  By working with these particular teams on a rotational basis, I will gain an in-depth overview of the office operations.

I have been working on a variety of things in RE these past two weeks, and I have learned a tremendous amount about the computer systems used in the studying of information that is given or bought from oil companies.

Working for MMS offers students an opportunity to learn about the industry in a hands on experience.

My title with MMS is a petroleum engineering technician, and although I am majoring in chemical engineering, the difference in the two fields is a welcomed challenge.  I now have the opportunity to learn about the oil field industry and its related components, whereas in school I would never have been introduced to the oil business.  I have gotten to see various rigs in the Gulf of Mexico and the amazing technology associated with these rigs.

It’s nice to work in a place where I can use the knowledge I gained from the courses I have taken, and people are always willing to work with me to help me learn more.

Working here with the STEP Program for two years has helped me to see the need for computer-based programmers and technicians in the world of business and communications.

SCA (Student Conservation Association) has given me the opportunity to expand my knowledge and gain valuable work experience with the MMS.

I really enjoyed being able to fly offshore and really got some hands on experience.  I also enjoyed being able to transfer to different departments allowing me to see all the different aspects of the Gulf Region.

As a petroleum engineering student, it was a great learning experience for me in the Lafayette District.

Throughout this summer, I have learned so much about drilling, workovers, production, inspections, and all sorts of other things that are handled in the District.  I have enjoyed meeting and learning from everyone here, and I want to compliment the MMS for hiring people that are so eager and willing to help me.  I look forward to returning to the Houma District next summer in order to continue my internship.
