Thinking Globally - Working Locally: A Conference on Food Safety Education.

Speaker Biographies

Laura Fox

Senior Public Affairs Specialist
Food Safety Staff
Food And Drug Administration
Center For Food Safety And Applied Nutrition

Laura Fox develops education programs for the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, Food Safety Staff. Since joining the staff in August 1998, she has developed programs for producers, consumers and the media. Consumer education campaigns target the general population, those who are at-risk for developing foodborne illness, as well as product-specific initiatives.

Ms. Fox is the project manager on two new school-based initiatives developed in partnership with the National Science Teachers Association. The first is the development of an Emmy-award winning middle and high school supplementary food science curriculum, Science and Our Food Supply. The second is the creation of a weeklong professional development program in food science program for middle and high school science teachers. To date, 150 science teachers from across the U.S. (including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands) have come to Washington, DC to learn about food science and food safety.

Ms. Fox is an FDA representative to the Partnership for Food Safety Education, a national organization dedicated to educating consumers about the importance of food safety. Ms. Fox helped develop the Partnership's two school-based education programs—one for children in grades K-3 and the other aimed at those in grades 4-6.

Prior to joining FDA, Ms. Fox held several managerial positions at the U.S. Department of Agriculture where she developed and managed the first food safety consumer hotline—the Meat and Poultry Hotline; initiated a media outreach program; and oversaw the development of many consumer and school-based education programs.

Ms. Fox has received many honor awards from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration for outstanding consumer education programs.

Ms. Fox has a B.S. degree in Journalism from the University of Florida, Gainesville.
