Speaker Biographies

Nancy-Ellen Kiernan, Ph.D.

Nancy-Ellen Kiernan, Ph.D. is Program Evaluator for Cooperative Extension and Outreach in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences. A specialist in the College of Agricultural Sciences with a Ph.D. in rural sociology and a member of the American Evaluation Association, Dr. Kiernan has co-authored numerous journal articles (in Evaluation Review, Evaluation and Program Planning, Preventive Veterinary Medicine, Journal of Dairy Science, Journal of Industrial Medicine and Journal of Nutrition Education).  She has worked extensively with county agents and subject matter specialists to employ a range of analytical techniques to evaluate particular subject fields as varied as fertilizer dealer effects on water quality, disinfecting layer houses, and nutrition for low income families. Dr. Kiernan recently received an Achieving Woman Award from Penn State's Commission of Women for innovative evaluations and mentoring activities, and with her colleague, county agent Mary Alice Gettings, a national award from the Association of Family and Consumer Scientists for Program Excellence Through Research for a focus group study of the perceptions and practices of food safety among seniors who prepare meals at home.
