Speaker Biographies

Cameron Ray Hackney

Education:

Ph.D., Food Science (emphasis in Food Microbiology), North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina, May 1980.

M.S., Agricultural Microbiology (environmental and sanitary microbiology), West Virginia University, Morgantown, West Virginia, December 1975.

B.S., Animal Science, West Virginia University, Morgantown, West Virginia, May 1973.

Experience:

2000-present: Dean of the Davis College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Consumer Sciences and Director of the West Virginia Experiment Station, West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV. I serve as the academic leader and executive officer of the Davis College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Consumer Sciences and report directly to the university provost. I also serve as the director of the university’s Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station and coordinate the college’s research and outreach program. The Davis College comprises 5 divisions, housing 20 undergraduate degree programs, 23 master’s degree options and 10 PhD options in 5 areas. It includes nearly 100 tenure track faculty, 1,600 undergraduates, and 300 graduate students. I provide administrative leadership to foster academic excellence in teaching, research, and outreach programs, fiscal and budget management, strategic planning, personnel management, and private-giving development. In addition to my university duties, I am chair of the dean’s section (AHS) of the Northeast Region. I am also a Chair of NERA’s (Northeastern Regional Association of State Agricultural Experiment Station Directors) executive committee. I serve as chair-elect for the administrative heads section of NASULGC.

1995-2000. Department Head and Professor, Department of Food Science and Technology, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia. Appointment split among extension, research and teaching.

  • Chair of the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Use of Scientific Criteria and Performance Standards For Safe Food, 2002 – 2003.
  • Elected Fellow of the International Association of Food Protection, August 2000.
  • Eastern Food Science Conference X. 1997 Outstanding Faculty Award.
  • State Council of Higher Education’s 1997 Outstanding Faculty Award. The Commonwealth’s highest honor for college and university faculty.
  • Educator Award, International Association of Milk, Food and Environmental Sanitarians, Inc.
  • Gamma Sigma Delta’s Extension Award of Merit. 1996
  • Certificate of Teaching Excellence, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, 1994.
  • College of Agriculture and Life Sciences' Academy of Teaching Excellence 1994 - present.
  • Gamma Sigma Delta’s Teaching Award of Merit. 1995
  • Virginia Tech’s Alumni Association's Extension Excellence Award 1995.
  • Outstanding Team Award, Epilson Sigma Phi, Alpha Gamma Chapter Reaction to Listeria monocytogenes in Blue Crab Meat 1993.
  • Seafood safety committee of the National Academy of Sciences 1989 - 1992.
