BWXT Y-12 recently received DOE's Secretarial Mentor-Protégé Teaming Award at the 6th annual Department of Energy Small Business Conference in Nashville, Tennessee.

Edwena Crowe, Information and Materials division manager for BWXT Y-12, accepted the award as the Mentor, Harbans Singla, president, MS Technology, Inc., accepted as the Protégé. The Mentor-Protégé agreement was established in November 2003.

"Our relationship with MS Technology has grown into a mutually beneficial one," said Crowe. "As a result of this agreement, microwave melting and casting is emerging as a state-of-the-art technology supporting Y-12 and also benefiting MS Technology's efforts to bring this technology to the private sector."

BWXT Y-12 also received the National Nuclear Security Administration's Small Business Achievement Award, Management and Operating (M&O) Contractor. This award recognized the NNSA M&O that achieved the highest level of effective utilization of small businesses within the previous year.

"These awards are indicative of BWXT Y-12's and NNSA Y-12 Site Office's commitment to the inclusiveness of small business in the local NNSA business enterprise," said Crowe. "We are proud to have led the way for DOE subcontractors into mentor-protégé agreements, and we intend to continue building these types of relationships by signing five more agreements before the end of the year."

This was the inaugural year for the NNSA Administrator's recognition of Small Business Achievements. The program was developed to recognized NNSA Program, Site and Management & Operating contractor personnel who contributed to maximizing participation of small businesses within the NNSA enterprise.

BWXT Y-12, L.L.C., a BWX Technologies, Inc. and Bechtel National, Inc. enterprise, operates the Y-12 National Security Complex for the National Nuclear Security Administration.
