The Metropolitan Medical Response System (MMRS) Program began in 1996 and currently is funded by the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The primary focus of the MMRS program is to develop or enhance existing emergency preparedness systems to effectively respond to a public health crisis, especially a weapons of mass destruction (WMD) event. Through preparation and coordination, local law enforcement, fire, hazmat, EMS, hospital, public health, and other "first response" personnel plan to more effectively respond in the first 48 hours of a public health crisis.
After a DHS reorganization, effective October 3, 2004, that placed the MMRS Program in the Office for Domestic Preparedness (ODP), the MMRS National Program Office physically moved to ODP on February 7, 2005 as part of the Office of Grants and Training. In April 2007, MMRS became part of the USDHS/FEMA National Preparedness Directorate in the Grant Capabilities Division. As of April 2007, MMRS contact information is as follows:
