The NCMHD Research Infrastructure in Minority Institutions (RIMI) Program establishes and improves the scientific infrastructure of predominately minority serving academic institutions. RIMI provides resources to strengthen faculty initiated research programs and improve the capacity for training future research scientists. A core goal of the RIMI Program is building a cadre of scientists through faculty development and student preparation.

The RIMI program supports building research capacity in small junior colleges, tribal colleges, and other academic institutions that only offer associate’s degrees, baccalaureate and/or master’s degrees in the basic, life, behavioral, and social sciences. The RIMI program grant provides a means for an institution to:

  • Strengthen its basic research infrastructure and capacity to improve and/or strengthen the institution’s science programs;
  • Institute a comprehensive research faculty development training program;
  • Establish an academic research enrichment training program for students interested in a science career; and
  • Support, as part of the supervised training process, individual faculty initiated research projects that may lead to development of independent researchers in minority health and health disparities.
