FSIS to Hold Meeting to Discuss Results of Expert Elicitation
Congressional and Public Affairs

Laura Reiser

WASHINGTON, June 15, 2007 - The Food Safety and Inspection (FSIS) today announced a public meeting to present the results of an expert elicitation relating to risk-based inspection (RBI) in processing plants.

To improve food safety and better protect public health, FSIS intends to better utilize the information regularly collected at processing establishments. By taking into account the relative risk of what each processing plant produces and how each plant is controlling risk in its operations, FSIS expects to more effectively focus inspection activities at those processing plants needing it the most, while continuing daily inspection at all processing facilities.

This meeting, focusing on the results of the second expert elicitation related to inherent product risk, is the fifth in a series of technical summits FSIS has conducted this year to address various elements of RBI. FSIS continues to seek input from all stakeholders in an open and transparent manner. The purpose of the expert elicitation was to collect data on the relative risks posed to public health by various types of processed meat and poultry products.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 26, 2007 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Room 107A, USDA Jamie Whitten Building, 12th St., SW, Jefferson Drive, Washington, DC 20250. The meeting will also be available by audio hook-up by calling toll-free 1-800-857-1742. The call leader is Dr. David Goldman and the passcode is FSIS.

Members of the public should pre-register for the meetings. Online registration information is located at https://webarchive.library.unt.edu/eot2008/20080920141311/http://www.fsis.usda.gov/News_&_Events/
