Native American Affairs Program
The Reclamation Program was established in 1902 to help open up and develop the 17 Western States by developing and building water supply projects to foster economic development of the West. Today Reclamation is seeking to increase the opportunities for tribes to benefit from the Reclamation Program. Within the Native American Program, Technical Assistance is a partnership program provided to tribes to facilitate their water and water-related resources management efforts on reservations and in communities.
A wide range of technical assistance activities have been accomplished in support of tribes. One of the main activity areas has been providing technical assistance to tribes in assessing their water supply and treatment needs and identifying potential solutions to those needs.
The Native American Affairs Technical Assistance Program can provide funding and technical guidance for a maximum of 2 consecutive years per proposal. Proposals must pertain to the use, protection, or development of water-related assets. Proposals can be of many types, such as studies, evaluations, assessments, technical reviews, water testing, or even engineering designs to fix a specific water resource problem. A tribe can submit more than one proposal in any year.
Under the auspices of the Native American Program, the Lahontan Basin Area Office has funded studies of Weber Dam fish passage for Lahontan cutthroat trout recovery (Walker River Paiute Tribe), arsenic contamination of the Fallon Basalt Aquifer (Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe), ground water - surface water conjunctive use in the Fallon Basalt Aquifer (Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe), Lahontan cutthroat trout monitoring (Summit Lake Paiute Tribe), contaminated drinking water sources study (Summit Lake Paiute Tribe), water quality monitoring projects (Walker River Paiute Tribe and South Fork Band) and water resource assessments (Te-Moak Shoshone Tribe and Duckwater Shoshone Tribe)
