Recreational Activities - Trip Planning
Preparation and planning should begin at home, not when you arrive at the trailhead. Here are some suggestions to prepare you for a successful hike:

- Get in shape!
- Practice using your equipment.
- Study a topographic map of the area.
- Plan your itinerary, camp locations, daily mileages and elevation gains.
- Plan your food. Repackage foods to minimize waste.
- Pack your bear canister at home!
- Leave a trip itinerary with someone at home.
All hikers should carry:
- Warm clothing and rain gear
- Water
- Extra food
- Emergency blanket
- First-aid kit
- Headlamp & extra batteries
- Sunscreen & hat
- Sunglasses
- Map & compass

In addition, overnight hikers should carry:
- Shelter
- Stove
- Sleeping bag & pad
Depending on trail conditions and your skill level, the following may also be necessary:
- Crampons
- Ice Axe
- Helmet
- Snowshoes or skis
- Trekking poles or walking sticks

Access a new tool at Sierra Nevada Wild (www.sierranevadawild.net). This interactive website allows you to gain information about restrictions and regulations that may be helpful as you plan your itinerary. Look at campfire and camping closures, trailhead facilities, and quota limits; print maps, see where stock and visitor use may be heavy, view black bear activity areas, and find out where food canisters are required or recommended.
