(Washington, DC) Chairman Bart Gordon (D-TN) joined House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) Thursday June 21, in announcing the completion of the final “Green the Capitol” report, which outlays plans to reduce the level of carbon dioxide emitted by House operations buildings and reduce its overall energy consumption, by 50 percent in 20 years.
“Throughout the 110th Congress, the Science & Technology Committee has been gathering information from dozens of experts on climate change and alternative energy resources, we now know the debate about global warming is over. It’s time to do something,” said Gordon. “I’m glad that my colleagues agree that it’s time to start leading by example, and what better place to start then with the Capitol.”
The report, completed by the Chief Administrative Officer, recommends, among other actions, operating the House in a carbon neutral manner; shifting to 100 percent renewable electric power and aggressively improving energy efficiency.
