NEW DEPUTY ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL NAMED FOR
ANTITRUST TO HANDLE INTERNATIONAL ISSUES

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Department of Justice announced today the appointment of Diane P. Wood as the Antitrust Division's Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Policy and Legislation.

Anne K. Bingaman, Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Antitrust Division, said Wood will oversee the Division's initiative to step up efforts in international antitrust enforcement.

"Ms. Wood has a strong background in dealing with trade issues and will be an extremely valuable asset as the Division examines our global economy," said Bingaman. "In order to successfully conduct investigations involving other countries, we are striving to implement ways to obtain greater access to confidential documents. Ms. Wood will help the Division achieve this important goal."

Wood comes to the Division from The University of Chicago Law School where she was the Harold J. and Marion F. Green Professor of International Legal Studies. She has been a consultant to numerous committees dealing with competition and international cooperation.

Recently, she has been a consultant to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, Committee on Competition Law and Policy working on international cooperation and merger issues for the European Community.

Previously, she was a visiting professor at several universities where she taught antitrust and international trade courses.

She served as Special Assistant to the Assistant Attorney General for the Antitrust Division from 1985 to 1987, and worked as a consultant on the revision of the 1977 Antitrust Guide for International Operations.

Wood earned her J.D. degree from The University of Texas School of Law, Austin, Texas, in 1975, and received her B.A. degree from The University of Texas at Austin.

"The Division is extremely fortunate to have on board an accomplished antitrust lawyer with such impressive international credentials," said Bingaman. "Her strong international background will contribute greatly to our efforts to step up international antitrust enforcement."
