Participants

We are looking forward to a great summer school this year. We expect to have 42 students, and a list of confirmed participants is now available online.

More information needed!

If you have not yet done so, please send us your travel plans as soon as possible. (See Travel Information below.) Requests for parking permits are needed by June 6.

Bring your passport

Filling out the form on the web will allow us to request a pass to ORNL for you. However, everyone will need to bring some type of photo identification with them to the summer school. If you are not a U.S. citizen, then you will need to bring your passport (and visa if you have one) with you. It is required that you show these in order to pick up your passes to the lab.

Venue and housing

The 15th National Nuclear Physics Summer School will be held on the campus of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville from June 16-27. Lectures will be held in the Science and Engineering Research Facility (SERF) located on "the Hill". Participants will be housed in the Andy Holt Apartments. The University provides free bus service (the "T") that runs approximately every 5 minutes from the Andy Holt Apartments to SERF. This map of the T bus route shows the locations of the SERF and the apartments. Better quality maps of the campus are also available.

Transportation Information

Participants should plan to arrive on Sunday, June 15, and depart on Saturday, June 28 (or on Friday evening, June 27). Knoxville is served by McGee-Tyson Airport located about 10 miles south of campus. We have made special arrangements for a UT van to pick up and drop off participants at the airport. Please send your flight information to us as soon as your plans are finalized (email to: npss03@mail.phy.ornl.gov), and we will arrange for the van to meet you at the airport.

We regret that we will not be able to provide financial support for travel due to restrictions on funding for the summer school. We will not be able to reimburse you for taxis, rental cars, parking, airfare, or similar expenses.

If you will be driving to the summer school, then you should come directly to Andy Holt Apartments on Sunday, June 15. Directions and maps are available from the UT website. It will be necessary for you to obtain a University parking permit in order to park your car campus. We can reserve a parking permit for you in advance that you can pick up at Andy Holt Apartments when you arrive. A deposit of $52 is required in order to obtain this parking permit, which you may pay when you arrive on campus. Half of the cost of this parking permit will be refunded to you if you return the parking permit before you leave. If you will be driving to campus and would like to reserve a parking permit, please let us know as soon as possible (email to: npss03@mail.phy.ornl.gov) and we will request one for you.

Food

Participants will be issued a "Vol" card on Monday, June 16. This card comes with a preset spending allocation that can be used at most of the dining facilities on campus. In addition, a few special events are planned where meals are included. There will be a welcome reception on Sunday, June 15 in the Andy Holt Apartments with food. A light breakfast will also be served during registration on Monday morning, June 16 at SERS.

Schedule

A tentative program for the school is now available. The school takes place at the SERS building each day from June 16-19 and 23-27. On June 20, we will spend the day at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Included will be tours of the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility and the Spallation Neutron Source, the largest science project currently under construction in the U.S. There will also be a few social events including a cruise on the Tennessee River with dinner and music.

Possible outings and activities

In addition to the regular academic and social activities of the school, there are many cultural and outdoor activities in Knoxville and the surrounding region during the summer. We will help coordinate some extracurricular activities if there is sufficient interest, e.g. a group hike in the Smokies, a visit to the aquarium and IMAX theater, or group tickets to the Tennessee Smokies (the Cardinals AA team).
