CHANGE IN LOCATION FOR FDA'S WASHINGTON, D.C., BIOTECH FOODS MEETING

The Food and Drug Administration today announced a change in the location of the public meeting on bioengineered foods for Washington, D.C., only. The new location is the auditorium of the Wilbur J. Cohen Building, 330 Independence Ave., S.W., Washington, D.C. The public meeting will be held on November 30, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

This public meeting will afford consumers, industry, and academia an opportunity to comment on FDA's jurisdiction related to foods derived from plants developed using bioengineering techniques. The public will be informed about current FDA policy for assuring the safety of bioengineered foods. The public will be asked whether this policy should be modified and also to comment on appropriate means of providing information to the public about bioengineered products in the food supply.

For information about and registration for the Washington meeting, contact Patricia Alexander, Office of Consumer Affairs, 301-827-5006; FAX 301-827-3052; e-mail palexand@oc.fda.gov.

An additional public meeting on bioengineered foods will be held in Oakland, California, on December 13, 1999.
