Faith Based and Community Initiatives in International Food Assistance

Under President Bush's Faith-Based and Community Initiative (FBCI), USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) is one of the USDA agencies ensuring that faith-based and community organizations have equal access to USDA programs and benefits. FAS is working with the Department to reach out and educate these organizations about our funding opportunities. We are committed to helping groups and individuals learn about and access FAS’ food aid programs that can enhance their capacity to serve those in need overseas.

Faith-based and community-based organizations (FBOs and CBOs) have a long history of involvement in the FAS’ food aid programs and a tradition of carrying out programs of assistance in developing countries around the world.  These organizations are important and long-standing partners in the Department of Agriculture’s efforts to provide food to hungry people, humanitarian assistance to those in need, and agricultural development support to newly emerging democracies.

FAS’ food aid programs operate through a variety of cooperating sponsors, which include private voluntary organizations (PVOs), non-profit organizations, cooperatives, foreign governments and intergovernmental organizations.  FAS’ food aid program policy encourages the participation of FBOs/CBOs on an equal footing with other kinds of cooperating sponsors and avoids barriers that would make their participation difficult.
