Oregon Trailheads in HCNRA
 

 

Buck Creek Trailhead - (map location C7) Buck Creek is located on Forest Road #3965 approximately 46 miles SE of Joseph, OR. From Joseph, OR., take State Highway #350. Drive approximately 8 miles, turn right onto Road #39 (Wallowa Mountain Loop Road). Go approximately 29 miles, turn left onto Forest Road #3965 (Hells Canyon Overlook) which is a paved 2-lane road for approximately 3 miles. Continue past the Hells Canyon Overlook on a gravel road until you reach Buck Creek Trailhead, approximately 6 miles. The trail is usually passable from June to November and gives immediate access into the south end of the Hells Canyon Wilderness. Trailhead facilities consist of stock loading ramp, stock water, hitchrails, restroom and an information board. Stock oriented camping is adjacent. Northwest Forest Pass required.

Dug Bar Trailhead - (map location D2) Dug Bar is approximately 60 miles NE of Enterprise, OR. on Forest Road #4260. From Joseph, OR., take State Highway #350, approximately 33 miles to Imnaha. At the town of Imnaha, take a left onto paved County Road #755, which turns to a steep, narrow dirt road, Forest Road #4260. Dug Bar is approximately 27 miles from Imnaha. It is usually open all year, but Forest Road #4260 can be slippery; when wet or frozen and is not recommended for trailers. We suggest only high clearance vehicles, but passenger cars could travel this road under dry conditions. There is a boat ramp, fully accessible restroom limited horse facilities and dispersed camping. This is the entrance into the north end of the Hells Canyon Wilderness. The trail is usually passable all year. The trailhead is located in an active cattle allotment; please respect this working ranch by closing all gates.

 Freezeout Trailhead - (map location C5) Located approximately 45 miles southeast of Enterprise, OR. From Joseph, OR., take State Highway #350 approximately 33 miles to Imnaha. Turn right onto County Road #727 for approximately 12 miles and then left onto Forest Road #4230. A stock loading ramp, hitch rails, stock water, and one fully accessible restroom exists at this trailhead. Only limited dispersed camping is available. This is a popular route to Saddle Creed and the Snake River. The trail is usually passable from April through December. Northwest Forest Pass required. Pay station on site.

Hat Point Trailhead - (map location D5) Hat Point is approximately 56 miles NE of Joseph, OR. From Joseph, OR., take State Highway #350, approximately 33 miles to Imnaha. At the town of Imnaha, take Forest Road #4240 and then #315 to Hat Point which is approximately 23.5 miles to the Hat Point Trailhead. This road is a one-lane gravel road with turnouts, has been resurfaced and is suitable for passenger cars. There is a stock loading ramp, hitch rails, fully accessible restrooms, no camping or water on site. You can usually access the trailhead from July to November, and is an entrance to the Hells Canyon Wilderness and the Snake River. Northwest Forest Pass required except for day use area. Pay station on site.

Indian Crossing Trailhead - (map location A8) Indian Crossing is located 47 miles southeast of Joseph, OR.. From Joseph, take State Highway #350 for approximately 8 miles and then a right onto Forest Road #39, travel approximately 30 miles. Turn right onto Forest Road 3960 travel approximately 9 miles to Indian Crossing. The trailhead has hitching rails, unloading ramp stock water, and restrooms. There is a 15 unit campground with drinking water on site. This is a major entrance into the upper Imnaha River, Hells Canyon Recreation Area and Eagle Cap Wilderness. This trail is usually open June - November. Northwest Forest Pass required. Pay station on site.

Lick Creek Trailhead - (map location A7) Lick Creek is approximately 19 miles southeast from Joseph, OR. From Joseph take State Highway #350 for approximately 8 miles, turn right on Forest Road #39 (Wallowa Mountains Loop Road). Go approximately 15 miles and turn right on Forest Road #3925 then an immediate right on Road #015 for approximately 1.5 miles. The trailhead offers limited parking with a loading ramp, 1 hitchrack, and a small information board. Lick Creek Trailhead is an entrance point to both Hells Canyon and Eagle Cap Wilderness areas. 

McGraw/Copper Creek Trailhead - McGraw/Copper Creek is located on Forest Roads #86 & #039 approximately 20 miles northeast of Halfway, Oregon. There are no facilities located at this site and limited dispersed camping. It is open year round and gives the visitor immediate access to the Snake River (Hells Canyon Reservoir) and the southern most end at Hells Canyon Wilderness. 

PO Saddle Trailhead - (map location C7) PO Saddle is located on Forest Road #3965 approximately 47 miles SE of Joseph, OR.. From Joseph, OR., take State Highway #350 . Drive approximately 8 miles, turn right onto Forest Road #39 (Wallowa Mountain Loop road). Go approximately 29 miles, turn left onto Forest Road #3965 (Hells Canyon Overlook) which is a paved 2 lane road for the first 3 miles. Continue past the Hells Canyon Overlook on a gravel road until you reach PO Saddle, approximately 7 miles. There is a gate at the end of the road that is locked 3 days prior to deer rifle season (late September) through late June; check with the Wallowa Mountain Visitor Center for the exact dates of gate closure. Typically, this trailhead is open from July to November providing access to the Summit Ridge National Recreation Trail #1774, Barton Heights and the south end of the Hells Canyon Wilderness. Facilities include stock unloading ramp, hitchrails, restrooms, information board, and overnight stock facilities.  Northwest Forest Pass required.

Twin Lakes Trailhead - (map location A8) Twin Lakes Trailhead is approximately 25 miles north of Halfway, OR on Forest Road #66. From Joseph, OR., take State Highway #350 for approximately 8 miles and turn right onto Forest Road #39 (Wallowa Mountain Loop Road). Travel approximately 58 miles and turn right onto the Duck Lake Road #66. There are 7 campground units, no potable water, and one restroom. At this time there are no hitch rails or unloading ramps. This area is usually passable by July and open until October. 

Warnock Corrals Trailhead - (map location D5) Warnock Corrals is approximately 59 miles NE of Joseph, OR. on Forest Road #4240. From Joseph, take State Highway #350, approximately 33 miles to Imnaha. At the town of Imnaha, take Forest #4240 (Hat Point Road) and travel 26 miles to Warnock Corral. The trailhead consists of a stock loading ramp, hitchrails, and one restroom. Dispersed camping is available. The trailhead is the main entrance to Lord Flat, Temperance Creek, and vicinity. The trail is typically passable from July to October. Northwest Forest Pass required.
