Using Public Transit
Via Metro
The U.S. Institute of Peace is a short walk from Metro's Farragut North (Red) and Farragut West (Blue/Orange) subway stations. At street level, walk north on Connecticut, keeping Farragut Park to your back. Turn right on M Street and walk east to 17th Street. The Institute is on the northwest corner of 17th Street and M Street, on the second floor of the National Restaurant Association building (four blocks north of the White House).
Via Bus
Metro buses S1, S2, and S4 run from Silver Spring to M Street and points south. Exit M Street and walk west on M. Metrobus 42 runs downtown from Mt. Pleasant through Adams Morgan and down Connecticut. Exit M Street and walk east on M.
Driving Directions
From Maryland
From Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI) and Points North
Take I-95 South to the Baltimore-Washington Parkway toward Washington. Stay on the parkway until it is possible to exit onto New York Avenue (approximately 45 miles from BWI). Follow New York Avenue right; follow Massachusetts Avenue under the Thomas Circle underpass. Stay on Massachusetts Avenue until reaching Scott Circle. Follow Scott Circle three-quarters of the way around and exit onto Rhode Island Avenue. Take a left on 17th Street, where you may find parking in front of the Institute, or turn right on M Street and find two garages on the left.
From Frederick, Maryland and Points Northwest
Follow I-270 South towards Washington, to where I-270 forks. Take the I-495 Virginia fork. Follow 495 into Virginia and exit onto the George Washington Memorial Parkway (exit 14) toward Washington. Follow this road approximately 10 miles and exit at the [Francis Scott] Key Bridge exit. As you are crossing the bridge, get in the far right lane to be prepared to exit east on the discreet exit for Whitehurst Freeway, about three-quarters distance over bridge. On Whitehurst Freeway, stay left and veer onto K Street. Follow K Street to 17th Street, and take a left. A few blocks up will be M Street, where the Institute is on the corner. Look for street parking or find two garages on the left after you turn left onto M Street.
From Silver Spring, Maryland
Take Georgia Avenue exit off I-495, drive south on 16th Street toward the White House, turning right on M Street. Look for street parking, or there are two garages on the left after you cross 17th Street.
From Virginia
From Dulles International Airport (IAD)
Take I-66 east toward Washington (approximately 28 miles) until you reach the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge. Cross over the bridge; this road will turn into Constitution Avenue. Follow Constitution and take a left onto 14th Street. Follow 14th Street north to I (Eye) Street. Take a left onto I Street and then take your second right (after McPherson Square) onto 15th Street. Follow 15th Street to M Street. Take a left onto M Street. Take M Street to 17th Street. The Institute is on the opposite corner on the right hand side in the National Restaurant Association building. (17th Street is one way running south in the morning.) Just past 17th Street, there are two parking garages on the left on M Street.
From Richmond, Virginia and Points South
Follow I-95 North towards Washington. I-95 will turn into 395 after you cross the beltway. Stay on 395 North and exit onto George Washington Memorial Parkway. (Note: Stay in left lane when trying to exit onto parkway; exit is on left side of I-395.) Follow George Washington Parkway to 14th Street Bridge. Follow 14th Street north to I (Eye) Street. Take a left onto I Street and then take your second right (after McPherson Square) onto 15th Street. Follow 15th Street to M Street. Take a left onto M Street. Take M Street to 17th Street. The Institute is on the opposite corner on the right hand side in the National Restaurant Association building. (17th Street is one way running south in the morning.) From Washington Reagan National Airport (DCA)
Exit airport onto George Washington Parkway and drive to 14th Street Bridge exit. Follow 14th Street north to I (Eye) Street. Take a left onto I Street and then take your second right (after McPherson Square) onto 15th Street. Follow 15th Street to M Street. Take a left onto M Street. Take M Street to 17th Street.
