Florida

On March 23, 2007, the Miami-Dade County Health Department-Tuberculosis Program in collaboration with the office of HIV/AIDS Project Share will host a seminar at the Rusty Pelican to commemorate World TB Day 2007. Guests at the seminar will include keynote speaker Mr. Phillip Talboy, Deputy Director, Division of TB Elimination, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Other speakers will include Dr. David Ashkin, Director, AG Holley State TB Hospital and Dr. Jimmy Keller, Deputy Director of the Florida Department of Health, Bureau of TB and Refugee Health. At the event Ms. Lillian Rivera, RN, MSN, the Administrator of the Miami-Dade County Health Department will announce that in 2006 there was a decrease in the number of TB cases reported in Miami-Dade County for the second year in a row.

Georgia

You are invited to participate in our first TB Awareness Walk on World TB Day, Saturday, March 24, 2007. It will be held in Atlanta in Grant Park. The length of the walk is approximately two miles. This event is not a fundraiser, but it is an awareness raising effort regarding a disease that is still with us around the world.

The lead organization for this event is the National TB Controllers Association (NTCA). There is no registration fee. You can now register online at www.tbwalk.org. Please spread the word about this walk.

Illinois

The Metropolitan Chicago TB Coalition (MCTC) is hosting an educational forum featuring keynote speaker Timothy Aksamit, M.D., a pulmonary and critical care physician from the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Dr. Aksamit will be presenting on the topic of extensively drug resistant TB (XDR TB). Other activities include the presentation of awards to frontline health care workers, an update on the number of TB cases in Illinois, a discussion on new diagnostic tools, such as the QuantiFERON-TB Gold procedure and an update from the Global Migration and Quarantine staff at O’Hare airport.

Kansas

In commemoration of World TB Day, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Sedgwick County Health Department, Heartland National TB Center, and The University of Kansas Medical Center Area Health Education Centers (KUMC AHEC) are sponsoring a workshop designed to expose participants to the many challenges facing tuberculosis control efforts of Kansas. The workshop will cover topics such as diagnosis and treatment for persons coinfected with HIV and TB; correctional health; Multi-Drug Resistant TB and Extremely Drug Resistant TB; new treatment options and special challenges for treatment; and managing tuberculosis among Somalian refugees in Kansas. Continuing education credits will be available.

Maryland

An all-day poster session will take place in the lobby of the State Health Department building, plus a noon-time lecture by Dr. Thomas Walsh. He is from the Montgomery County health department, and has had enormous experience in dealing with TB cases from all over the world. The title of his talk is “TB, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly”. Many of the county health departments will also have activities related to TB awareness that day.

Minnesota

Tuberculosis Update is an educational session targeted to health care providers who work in and around Ramsey County. Speakers are from the St. Paul – Ramsey County Department of Public Health, the Minnesota Department of Health, and the Heartland National Tuberculosis Center. Topics will include TB epidemiology, blood assays, and current treatment for latent TB infection and active TB disease. The Minnesota Department of Health sent a World TB Day message to all local public health departments and a variety of immigrant and refugee community leaders, and health care providers serving populations at risk for TB. The message explained the significance of the day and encouraged individuals and communities to actively raise awareness about TB through activities such as writing articles and letters to the editor in local newspapers, displaying informational materials about TB, appearing on local radio shows, providing staff training or community education, and communicating with elected officials about public policy issues related to TB.

In addition, MDH TB program staff participated in two TB-related educational sessions – one in Ramsey County on March 22 and one in Dakota County on March 28. World TB Day information was included on the MDH website and articles were submitted to local African, Hmong, and Spanish-language newspapers.

New York, New York

In commemoration of World TB Day, March 24, the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH), Bureau of Tuberculosis Control will:

  • Issue a press release describing the steady decline in overall TB cases in NYC, the increase of TB cases among the foreign-born and the free TB services offered by the NYC DOHMH Chest Centers;
  • Collaborate with the Coalition for a TB-Free NYC to distribute TB education materials; refer patients to NYC DOHMH Chest Centers; meet with and write to members of congress; host events to increase community awareness of TB; and conduct outreach and screening activities in high-risk communities;
  • Host a 2007 Annual TB Conference entitled “TB Anywhere is TB Everywhere”. This year’s conference will address some of the ongoing challenges in TB control and prevention in NYC.

Virginia

The Division of Disease Prevention, TB Control Program will be holding our annual conference to educate and train our nursing staff throughout the state of Virginia.  “Building Bridges: Elements of a Tuberculosis Control Program” is the theme for our 3-day conference planned from March 21-23.  Topics will include MDR/XDR TB; HIV/TB Co-infection; Pediatric TB; Improving your Case Management; Alternative Strategies for LTBI Completion; Recognizing and Dealing with Outbreaks; TB in Correction and Detention Facilities; and more.  We will honor the hard work of our field staff in 2006 to eliminate TB by recognizing the winners of our annual Spittoon Awards with a special awards ceremony and dinner on Thursday evening.

International Activities

Banjul, The Gambia

Activities include displaying posters in and around the city, including big towns and villages to inform people about the event and day. Panel discussions on TB with a questions and answers session will be broadcast on City Limit Radio on March 23. On March 24, volunteers, patients and well-wishers will march around town. Following the parade speeches and cultural entertainment will be showcased. More radio programs will be broadcast on March 25 and a cleaning exercise will take place at all the chest/ TB clinics. On the 26th schools will participate in drama competitions with an award ceremony to follow.

Moscow, Russia

On March 23, the WHO TB Control Programme will host a press conference to raise awareness about TB and World TB Day activities. During the press conference they will announce winners of the journalists’ contest for excellence in reporting TB-related issues conducted in 2006 and winners of the children’s poster contest.

During the month of March, experts from the WHO TB Control Programme and national counterparts will be featured on television and radio programs and video materials will be distributed to TV stations. A scientific conference for medical students and research fellows aimed to spark interest in the TB problem and encourage students to pursue the career in TB control.

Puerto Rico

On March 21, the TB Control Program at the Puerto Rico Department of Health, in conjunction with Southeastern National Tuberculosis Center (SNTC), is going to hold a TB conference to celebrate World TB Day. Presentations will be given by Dr. Michael Lauzardo from SNTC, Dr. Ana Alvarez from University of Florida, and staff from the TB Control Program in Puerto Rico. Topics of the training include: TB/HIV; TB Pediatric and TB & Advocacy. The conference will be held in San Juan, Puerto Rico for public health and clinical professionals from a variety of hospitals, associations, and the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus among others.

During the month of March, the TB Control Program will be joining a variety of educational activities such as conferences and health fairs at different locations around the country. In addition, the Puerto Rico Department of Health central-level bulletin board will feature information about XDR-TB for the public and employees.

Zambia

Churches Health Association of Zambia (CHAZ), with its 125 affiliate member health facilities and faith-based organizations, will march in the communities displaying banners with TB messages, singing, chanting slogans that TB is curable as well as preventable. Along the way, community members, including TB patients, will be asked to join in at selected places to listen from different speeches, watch drama performances, hear poems, and witness personal testimonies from former and current TB patients. There will be dancing and singing performances from different churches, schools and other community groups. Following the march, there will be a social event called “games for life” in which groups compete in different categories of health-related games.
