Dr. Dunham Now Director Of OMUMS and Acting CVM Deputy Director
Effective August 20, 2006, Dr. Bernadette Dunham assumed the new roles of Director, Office of Minor Use and Minor Species (OMUMS) and Acting Deputy Center Director for FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM.)
Previously, Dr. Dunham was the Deputy Director of CVM’s Office of New Animal Drug Evaluation. Dr. Dunham succeeds Dr. Andrew Beaulieu as the Director of OMUMS as Dr. Beaulieu prepares for retirement in January 2007.
“The Minor Use and Minor Species Animal Health Act of 2004”, http://www.fda.gov/cvm/minortoc.htm#Laws ) dubbed the “MUMS act” for Minor Use/Minor Species, was signed into law on August 2, 2004. The law helps make more medications legally available to veterinarians and animal owners to treat minor animal species and uncommon diseases in the major animal species.
CVM’s former Deputy Center Director, RADM Linda Tollefson, is now the Assistant Commissioner for Science, in FDA’s Office of Science and Health Coordination. Dr. Dunham will be CVM’s Acting Deputy Center Director until there is a permanent replacement for RADM Tollefson.
Prior to joining CVM in December 2002, Dr. Dunham was the Acting Director of American Veterinary Medical Association's Governmental Relations Division in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Dunham received her D.V.M. from the Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. She was in private practice (companion animal) in Ontario for three years before moving to Boston, MA, where she received her Ph.D. from Boston University. Following her post-doctoral studies in Boston, she participated in a residency program in the Department of Pathology at the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University. In 1988, Dr. Dunham joined the faculty of the Department of Pharmacology at the State University of New York (SUNY) Health Science Center, Syracuse, NY where her research focused on the molecular regulation of cardiac gap junction proteins. Concurrently, she was the Director of Laboratory Animal Medicine, Department of Laboratory Animal Resources, from 1989-1995 at the SUNY Health Science Center, Syracuse, NY.
Dr. Dunham is also an Adjunct Professor with the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in Blacksburg, VA, a position she has held since 1996. She lectures on a variety of topics from emerging issues and opportunities in veterinary medicine to the role of consensus building in policy development.
