One federal employee's experience: use of color in word processing

"I am blind and multiply disabled. One problem I have recently run into at [my agency] is that when I am on a committee wordsmithing documents, my JAWS for Windows screen-reader program cannot search for text by color. When members are making proposed changes, one person will pick blue, one purple, one red, etc."

Until screen readers can recognize colors or scripts are written to assign labels to colors, federal employees who are working collaboratively with persons who are blind or color blind should routinely use a second means of identifying each person's contributions, such as inserting his or her initials before a change.
