One of the largest chamber scanning electron microscopes in the world is now available to industry and government. The LC‑SEM Laboratory, located at Oak Ridge’s Y‑12 National Security Complex, brings together world-class equipment, scientists and technicians to provide materials characterization and failure analysis for unusually large parts — at industry standard rates.

Because the LC‑SEM’s chamber is so large — large enough to accommodate a V6 engine — there’s no need to cut small sections to analyze expensive parts. This nondestructive testing is just one exceptional feature of the LC‑SEM; Y‑12’s LC‑SEM Laboratory is an unparalleled tool for materials analysis.

The LC-SEM easily accommodates this V-6 engine block.

Available services include

  • High-resolution imaging
  • Surface characterization
  • Metal microstructure
  • Expanded material range
