Screen capture of Super Boiler video

The Super Boiler project targets the development of breakthrough steam generation technology with ultra-high efficiency, ultra-low emissions, reduced footprint, and state of the art controls for optimized performance. Watch an informational video to learn about the development and benefits of the Super Boiler.

Combustion systems account for nearly three-quarters of all energy used in U.S. manufacturing. Combustion components and systems offer opportunities for significant energy and emissions savings in almost every industry. The Industrial Technology Program's (ITP) combustion subprogram works in partnership with industry to conduct R&D that will improve the energy, environmental performance, and cost savings of these systems. In addition, through the Industries of the Future process, ITP provides cost-shared funding for combustion-related projects identified as priorities by specific industries.

Through the combustion subprogram, ITP's objective is to increase the efficiency of combustion systems while promoting industrial productivity and growth. ITP's Combustion R&D projects tackle industry needs that involve high levels of financial risk yet offer a high payoff in industrial benefits. Industrial facilities and energy companies are working in partnership with ITP to tackle R&D barriers and build pathways toward more efficient combustion systems.

R&D Technology Portfolio

ITP's Combustion R&D investments are strategically allocated to maximize benefits. The R&D portfolio focuses on the major energy-consuming processes, such as steam and process heating, to produce process improvements for U.S. industry.

Solicitations

ITP awards cost-shared funding for R&D projects through a competitive solicitation process. R&D is performed by collaborative partnerships that address top opportunities for energy savings and help realize national goals for energy and the environment.

Industry Partnerships

Combustion-intensive industries recognize that energy efficiency offers productivity and cost advantages. ITP supports efforts to maintain a combustion systems vision and roadmap that set economic, energy, and environmental goals and prioritize R&D needs.

Energy Analysis

ITP has developed a series of analytical reports on the energy use and emissions of industrial energy systems. ITP uses these publications and the industry roadmaps to focus its combustion R&D investments on the best opportunities.
