Births

Source: CDC/NCHS, National Vital Statistics System. U.S. National Center for Health Statistics, Vital Statistics of the United States, Vol. I, Natality. Updated annually. http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/births.htm

Definitions:

Births is the number of live births occurring to the residents of an area during the period as reported from the the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS).

Scope and Methodology:

The National Vital Statistics System, the Federal compilation of vital statistics data, is the result of the cooperation between the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) and the states to provide access to statistical information from birth certificates. The data in this access tool is based on information from all birth certificates filed in the 50 States and the District of Columbia.

In all areas, practically all births are registered. The most recent test of the completeness of birth registration, conducted on a sample of births from 1964 to 1968, showed that 99.3 percent of all births in the United States during that period were registered.

Birth statistics are limited to events occurring during the year. The data shown here are by place of residence and exclude events occurring to nonresidents of the United States. Births that occur outside the United States are excluded from the data system.
