132 EVENTS: Saturday-September 27, 2008 Camp Hosts Needed for Pfeiffer Big Sur CA

Sponsor: Various Location: Big Sur, CA 93920 Stard/End Dates: 4/1/2008--12/31/2008 Description: This is a unique opportunity for the right person or couple to camp host and enjoy some of the most magnificent, rugged coastline in the world! Expect specatular waterfalls, majestic redwood forests, miles of hiking trails, crystal clear waters, and abundant wildlife. You will be nestled in a remote, small community along scenic Hwy 1, with moderate temperature year-round. Big Sur has been described as a spiritual center, and is a source of inspiration for artists and naturalists worldwide. Hwever, this may not be the ideal arrangement if you have a large RV or trailer due to the limits of narrow, winding Hwy 1. A minimum 20 hours per week for at least a 3 month commitment is requested. Typical camp host duties include cash handling, firewood sales, staffing the Visitor's Center, interpretation, light maintenance, conducting whale watches, assisting park staff, and campground checks. In addition, you will be asked to share your own special skills, interests and talents. A uniform is provided. Your campsite includes water and electrical hook-ups. Sewer service is a once a week pump out. The city of Monterey is approximately 1 hr drive away. Camp Host positions are available year-round in three CA State Parks in Big Sur: Andrew Molera, Julia Pfeiffer Burns and Pfeiffer Big Sur. Each unique park provides a different experience. NPLD Annual Park Clean Up

This year's cleanup will focus on removing litter and debris from the roads, shoreline, camping, and picnic areas in the park.

We have a license agreement with the Town of Huntington to do this education at Manor Farm and we are the official Park Steward for the adjoining Berkeley Jackson County Park (Manor Farm is 210 Manor Road, Huntington (just north of Jericho Tpk), in the Elwood School District). On Saturday September 27 (raindate 9/28), we have our annual LI Naturally environmental fair and Community Yard Sale at Manor Farm from 10 - 4. We are seeking volunteers to help with this event (to work in shifts from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm): + setting up the Yard Sale spaces the evening before (Friday) + directing cars coming in -- vendors or tablers as well as attendees so they know where they can and cannot go and park + helping to set up tables and such for the environmental fair + overseeing the table for painting pumpkins + overseeing the table for stenciling leaves on cloth napkins (this is fabric paint so wear an apron or old clothes!) + leading field games + possible help with other tables or games + helping the musicians set up/take down + reading stories to young attendees + help welcome and count attendees + taking everything down/cleaning up at the end of the day Note this event is in an open field where there is virtually no shade. Celebrate National Public Lands Day on Saturday September 27th from 7:30 am to 12:00 noon at Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge.Local volunteers will devote their morning to thinning and weeding out a Butterfly garden, removing weeds from a .4 mile Cypress swamp Boardwalk, and planting Cypress trees. We will be tagging monarch butterflies for research efforts. We will have a limited supply of extra butterfly nets that can be borrowed. Also, some landscaping around the visitor center will undergo some maintenance. There will also be some litter pick up for those that want to help us clean up around our Dam and Tailwater areas. Dress appropriately for level of activity of your desire. If it rains near the date of event most places will be muddy. Bring your picnic lunch and drinks and we will have a group picnic together at one of our shelters afterwards. Thank you in advance. We can use 3-5 adults to help us manage the day's volunteer activities.

In 2007, nearly 90,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, planted trees and plants, and removed trash and invasive plants. Join us on Saturday, September 27, 2008 for the 15th annual National Public Lands Day and help us care for our land. At Greenbelt Park, we will be focusing on the Still Creek watershed, the trail system and invasive plant removal. All trail and watershed participants will meet at the Sweetgum Picnic Area by 8:45a.m. The trail work and watershed cleanup will begin at 9:00 a.m. and end by 12 Noon. Water will be provided. Must be comfortable interacting with people and standing for sustained periods of time. Volunteers can choose between morning shift - 10 am to 3:30 pm or afternoon shift - 3:30 pm to 9 pm.
