NPS Alcatraz Island Gardener [SFRI]
Alcatraz Island (San Francisco, CA)
Location: San Francisco, CA 94123
Position Description
Alcatraz Island, the first US fort on the west coast and known for housing the some of the country's most infamous prisoners, also once featured gardens of plants from around the world. Many of these plants are now naturalized on the island while others have disappeared.

Filled with rare roses and historically significant cultivars, the gardens were tended first by 19th century soldiers, then prisoners, guards and their families. Since the prison's closure in 1963 and transfer to the National Park Service in 1972, the plants seen on the island today are what remain of the original gardens. In October 2003 the National Park Service, in partnership with the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy and the Garden Conservancy, will pilot a volunteer gardening program to begin restoring the gardens to their former glory and historic significance.

Hours per month: 3 hour shift, Wednesday mornings (9am-12 pm). Volunteers may commit weekly or every other week. Two-three month commitment requested.

Description of Duties: Volunteers will clear invasive weeds, and salvage, nurture, and map the remaining plants. Cuttings will be taken for propagation of historic plants for eventual incorporation back onto the gardens. Green waste will be composted and volunteers will manage and maintain the compost. Work may require the use tools such as shovels, rakes, hand picks, pruning tools and wheel barrels. All restoration activities will be consistent with the cultural resources plan for the site. The current goal is to maintain and restore health to the existing significant historic plants in anticipation of the eventual restoration of the gardens.

Knowledge/Skills Desired:

  • Volunteers should be physically fit, able to lift about 25-30 pounds, kneel for extended periods, and work with tools
  • Volunteers must be comfortable traveling by boat to Alcatraz Island and working outside under variable weather conditions for extended periods
  • Volunteers will also be working in highly visible locations on Alcatraz, so they should be comfortable interacting with the general public and answering questions about their work

NPS Weed Watchers [JJOR]
Golden Gate National Recreation Area (San Francisco, CA)
Location: San Francisco, CA 94123-1307
Position Description
Objective: To train volunteers to identify and report high-risk incipient invasive plants while hiking/patrolling trails and roadsides in designated areas in Golden Gate National Recreational Area (GGNRA).

Background: The National Park Service’s Inventory and Monitoring Program is charged with “improving natural resource management through greater reliance on scientific knowledge.” Invasive species are one of the top priorities for monitoring in our national parks, and early detection of new plant species is a key focus for the San Francisco Bay Area Network (SFAN) of national parks. Discovering weeds before they become well-established is critical to reducing damage to ecosystem integrity, preventing the loss of habitat for rare plants and animals, and preventing costly natural resource management. The SFAN has established an invasive species early detection program to create a priority list of plants with documented invasive potential that occur at low densities, and to institute a system for patrolling trails, roadsides, and waterways for these priority weeds. Trained volunteers will be an integral component of this priority weed search effort.

As a Weed Watcher you will learn to identify invasive plants of the region, and how to map and report your findings. Interns will be trained in progressively more complex weed identification and data collection. Deepen your understanding of the natural world while playing an important role in the protection of the unique resources at the park.

Description of Duties

  • Participate in invasive plant identification and data collection training.
  • Assist park staff in trail and roadside invasive plant monitoring and mapping.
  • Follow guidelines in making safety a priority; responsible for use of personal protective gear and insuring that all tools, equipment, vehicles and other co-workers are working safely in all related conditions.
  • Ability to follow instructions from all park staff, understand and respect all park regulations and policies. Proudly wear the NPS volunteer uniform during working hours.

Knowledge/Skills Desired

  • Knowledge of San Francisco Bay region flora, and/or willingness to learn.
  • Knowledge of Global Positioning System (GPS) devices and/or willingness to learn.
  • The ability to work with a diverse community of people alongside with park personnel.
  • Desire and ability to work outdoors, at times in inclement weather and terrain as well as sometimes exert strenuous physical activity while walking.

Benefits

  • Training in park staff procedures and policies and knowledge of resources.
  • Valuable training in general botany, invasive species, and Global Positioning System (GPS) units and their use in conservation and resource management.
  • Opportunities to enjoy the scenery, wildlife and cultural resources of this spectacular park.
  • Become a stewardship leader in your community.

Requirements

  • Enjoy working with a diverse community of people.
  • At minimum, a 6 month commitment.
  • A J-1 visa is required for all international (non-resident) volunteers.
  • A completed volunteer application form.
  • Work in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Work as a part of a team and respect co-workers.

USGS North Coastal Basins Fisheries Survey
USGS (Gainesville, FL)
Location: Gainesville, FL 32653
Position Description
The USGS is conducting a volunteer supported juvenile fisheries survey in the intra-coastal between the Rt 210 bridge (Palm Valley) and New Smyrna Beach (Ponce Inlet) in Florida. We do our field work onboard a 23' mullet skiff (outboard in the bow, center console) and are on the water about 6 days/month. We collect fish with a 20' wide Otter trawl and a 70' beach seine. We also collect water samples for total Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Chlorophyll and record various water characteristics (temp, pH, dissolved oxygen, etc.). We generally cover a range of 10-15 NM each day. To accomplish all this we require a crew of four - at least two of whom are volunteers from various government environmental agencies, universities, and the general public. Because this is a daytime study, we can collect specimens from one hour after sunrise until one hour before sunset. We generally meet at a boat ramp at 0800 and plan on being out all day.

The field work involves collecting, identifying, and enumerating all fish and commercially important invertebrates (crabs and shrimp). We also measure the length of from ten to forty specimens depending on species. Most of the catch is returned to the water but some specimens are returned to the laboratory to confirm identification. We need help handling the nets, sorting, counting, and measuring the catch as well as taking notes.

The work is funded by a cooperative agreement between the St. John's River Water Management District and the USGS. Collected data will be used by the water management district to assess the health of the aquatic environment. The study's main objective is to collect baseline information on the occurrence and distribution of juvenile fishes in an area that until now has not been systematically studied.

The work can be hard or uncomfortable at times but is always rewarding and interesting. Volunteers have the opportunity to learn the names of more kinds of fish than they realized were down there as well as some methods of marine fisheries research. They also have the opportunity to help protect the environment. In the process they learn more about the environment and often get to see some very unusual fish like puffers, seahorses, and batfish. Most of the fish we catch are under a few inches but we occasionally catch a nice redfish or sheepshead as well.

While volunteers mainly support field work, there are opportunities in the lab and office in Gainesville as well.
