NPS Interpretation Intern
Curecanti National Recreation Area (Gunnison, CO)
Location: Gunnison, CO 81230
Position Description
NOTE: This position has been filled for 2008. The following information refers to our 2009 position.

Do you like hiking, spending time outdoors, and sharing your passion for learning and nature with others? Help visitors make intellectual and emotional connections to park resources by volunteering with the Curecanti Interpretation program this summer!

Interns work alongside interpretation staff, presenting formal interpretive programs at campgrounds and on a tour boat, doing informal interpretation by roving trails and overlooks and performing boat patrols, working on special projects, staffing two visitor centers, and shadowing staff from other divisions.

Interns of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities are welcome to apply. Interns must be willing to wear a uniform, comply with a background check, and work as a part of a team. The job does entail some physical exertion, including a long stairway and trail to and from boat tours, park roves, and lifting boxes, all at above 7,500 feet in elevation. Accommodations may be available for those with physical limitations. Shifts often include weekends and evenings.

Interns are provided with a uniform, a nominal stipend ($100/week), and free housing. The housing is in a dormitory, with a private bedroom, a bathroom shared with one other person, and kitchen, laundry, and living room facilities shared. Satellite TV, a pay phone, and wireless internet service are provided; private phone lines may not be installed, and cell phones may have limited reception in the area.

Ideally Interns work from May 12 for 12-15 weeks (our seasonal training is May 13-24), but there is some flexibility. Applications will be reviewed in early February. We hope to hire by late February/ early March of 2008.

Natural Bridges National Monument is located in beautiful southeastern Utah. It is home to three massive natural stone bridges and dozens of world-class archeological sites, hidden within narrow canyons. The monument is situated at the heart of Cedar Mesa with an elevation of 6,500 feet and set in a lush pinon-juniper forest. As a result, the monument enjoys a much milder climate than the surrounding Four-corners area.

Reimbursement for meals will be available at $17 per day worked. As we have a 4-day work week for volunteers, reimbursement is $68 per week.

Required Shifts: Volunteer shifts will be four days a week, 8-9 hours per day, with three day weekends, perfect for planning short trips to enjoy the area. A 5-day week is also available, though we encourage 3-day weekends so the volunteer can get out and enjoy the area. Evening, weekend work will be required. NPS HRT/Aim High Outdoor Education Internship [LPON]
Golden Gate National Recreation Area (Marin, CA)
Location: Marin, CA 94941
Position Description
The Habitat Restoration Team is a National Park Service volunteer program established in 1988. HRT’s goal is to engage the community members to help preserve, restore and maintain the natural diversity and beauty of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, located just north of San Francisco, CA.

HRT’s main focus is to control invasive non-native plants and restore native plant communities north of the Golden Gate Bridge. This work is accomplished through the weekly participation of many volunteers. The internship involves weekly participation in the volunteer program in Tennessee Valley native plant nursery and the Sunday restoration workdays located in the Marin Headlands. The internship also involves the seasonal volunteer Invasive Plant Patrol Program conducted throughout the park.

Aim High provides underserved urban youth with challenging, innovative and highly supportive educational programs. The goal of Aim High is to ensure that our students are well prepared for success in school, have a deep appreciation for community, and are aware of the issues—personal, local and environmental—that affect their lives

The mission of the Aim High Headlands Environmental Home (AH-HEH) is to provide Aim High students with hands-on experiences fostering environmental awareness, personal growth, interpersonal understanding, and ultimately a stewardship ethic to carry into all areas of life.

For this internship you will be expected to work with the Aim High Headlands Environmental Home Program 2 days per week both preparing for and leading visits with the students and with the Habitat Restoration Team for the remaining 3 days.
