NPS National Public Lands Day Event -- Big Meadows
Shenandoah National Park (Luray, VA)
Location: Luray, VA 22835
Position Description

Shenandoah National Park invites the public to join in a National Public Lands Day Event for a day of learning and participation in the identification and control of invasive exotic plants September 27, 2008. Park staff and volunteers will describe the situation regarding invasive plant threats and current impacts on native wildflowers. They will also lead expeditions around Big Meadows where the public may join in to protect the meadow’s beauty by controlling known invasive plant threats. This event is intended to show how the public can volunteer to fight back against invasive plants and how with simple awareness they can avoid environmental problems at home.

Activities begin 9:00 a.m. Saturday at Byrd Visitor Center in Big Meadows. The Civilian Conservation Corps celebration takes place the same day and may combine for some very interesting interpretive talks. You won't want to miss them. Hands-on activity follows in Big Meadows. The talks and work session will be repeated at 1:30 P.M. Free park admission to attend the event is available to everyone. Information may be obtained by contacting the Shenandoah National Park’s Invasive Plant Management office in advance at (540) 999-3492.

Over 25 percent of the plant species at Shenandoah National Park are not native to the area. Many of those plants do not have the natural biological control agents from their home environments and thus have unfair advantage over natives. They are invasive. Though exotic plants are not new to the area, the impacts of invasive exotics are increasingly serious. Native species are being displaced and the processes of forest succession are being stopped by the overwhelming presence of such plants as garlic mustard, Oriental lady's thumb, kudzu, mile-a-minute vine, Oriental bittersweet, tree of heaven and others. Without controls, it may become impossible to maintain the Park’s designated federal wilderness in a natural untrammeled condition. By presidential Executive Order #13112, the National Park Service and other federal agencies are directed to control invasive species and ensure that no new exotic infestations become established.

The National Public Lands Day event at Big Meadows is part of a larger program for increasing public volunteerism throughout the country. The Shenandoah event is made possible by a grant from the National Park Foundation and Tauck Foundation, and the participation of National Park Conservation Association, BASF, Dow AgroSciences, ARAMARK Convention and Tourism Services (the authorized concessioner responsible for providing lodging and other visitor services in the park), and several others. Overnight accommodations can be secured by calling for reservations at (800) 999-4714.

NPS Alcatraz Island Gardener [SFRI]
Alcatraz Island (San Francisco, CA)
Location: San Francisco, CA 94123
Position Description
Alcatraz Island, the first US fort on the west coast and known for housing the some of the country's most infamous prisoners, also once featured gardens of plants from around the world. Many of these plants are now naturalized on the island while others have disappeared.

Filled with rare roses and historically significant cultivars, the gardens were tended first by 19th century soldiers, then prisoners, guards and their families. Since the prison's closure in 1963 and transfer to the National Park Service in 1972, the plants seen on the island today are what remain of the original gardens. In October 2003 the National Park Service, in partnership with the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy and the Garden Conservancy, will pilot a volunteer gardening program to begin restoring the gardens to their former glory and historic significance.

Hours per month: 3 hour shift, Wednesday mornings (9am-12 pm). Volunteers may commit weekly or every other week. Two-three month commitment requested.

Description of Duties: Volunteers will clear invasive weeds, and salvage, nurture, and map the remaining plants.
