SAMHSA Awards $39 Million for 15 Addiction Technology Transfer Centers

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration today announced the award of $39 million over five years to fund 15 Addiction Technology Transfer Centers.

The ATTCs support the workforce that provides addictions treatment services to the 3.9 million Americans age 12 and older who received treatment for alcohol or illicit drug problems in the past year (National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 2005).

"By training treatment providers and other professionals in the latest evidence-based practices, Addiction Technology Transfer Centers help ensure that those who need treatment receive the best care," said SAMHSA Administrator Terry Cline, Ph.D. "ATTCs are an integral part of SAMHSA's work to improve access to information on tested interventions and to speed their use in the field."

The 15 awards are funded up to $550,000 per year in total costs. Continuation of these awards is subject to the availability of funds as well as the progress achieved by the grantees. Total funding for year one is $7.8 million.

Fourteen regional centers and one national coordinating center are the recipients of these awards. Together with Single State Authorities, treatment provider associations, addictions counselors, multidisciplinary professionals, faith and recovery community leaders, family members of those in recovery, and other stakeholders, the ATTCs assess the training and development needs of the substance use disorders workforce. They develop and conduct training and technology transfer activities to meet identified needs. Particular emphasis is placed on raising awareness of and improving skills in using evidence-based and promising treatment/recovery practices in recovery-oriented systems of care. The grantees are:
