NREL's Advanced Petroleum Based Fuels research supports the U.S. Department of Energy's Vehicle Technologies Program.

The Advanced Petroleum Based Fuels (APBF) team investigates how new fuels and lubricants can enable transportation systems that are more efficient and that meet stringent emission standards. By using a systems approach, the research aims to improve vehicle efficiency, thereby decreasing our nation's dependence on imported petroleum products. Also of critical importance is determining how fuel and lubricant properties affect the performance of emission control devices.

The APBF Diesel Emission Control (DEC) project leverages a strong partnership with industry to determine how fuel properties affect emissions from diesel engines equipped with state of the art control technologies.

The project also includes research to determine how advanced fuels and blending components can enable or expand the operating range of high efficiency, low emissions combustion strategies.

NREL's APBF work is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. This research supports several NREL programs and is led by NREL's Center for Transportation Technologies and Systems (CTTS). The APBF project is part of CTTS' Fuels Performance Group. Other projects within this group include Nonpetroleum Based Fuels, New Fuels Technology Impacts, and the Renewable Fuels and Lubricants (ReFUEL) Laboratory.
