Beyond Innovation

That's what we are doing here at NREL. Looking beyond energy innovation—to commercialization at a more accelerated pace than we've ever seen before.

It's crucial to do so. The rapid growth of energy demand, the uncertainty of future supplies, the increasing reliance on oil from unstable regions, and the resulting dramatic rise in fossil fuel prices—all these are creating formidable challenges to our economy and our energy security. At the same time, the growing concentration of carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere is a looming threat to our environment.

Without some fundamental changes in how we generate—and how we use—our energy, these challenges threaten our livelihoods, our lifestyles and our planet.

The world must transform its current energy system on a global scale, and in order to help achieve this transformation, our nation must focus on moving next-generation energy technologies into the marketplace far more quickly than we are doing now.

At NREL, we are working hard to get technologies into the market faster than ever. At the same time, we are continuing to help identify and break down the structural barriers that are preventing advanced energy technologies from being adopted quickly and easily.

Our work is enormously challenging, yet it's essential to our energy future. I invite you to browse our website and find out more about the exciting and innovative work being done at NREL. Our work—beyond innovation to rapid commercialization—is a crucial part of creating a sustainable energy future for not only our nation but the world.
